Things to Consider In Planning a Restroom Design

Restroom or public toilet is a room where there are several toilets and sinks ready to use for the public. The thing about it being meant to be used publicly coaxes more consideration which is put into the design. Restroom design, as it’s already obvious, needs to provide a whole comfort for everyone who uses the toilet. Thus, restroom design is not a light matter.

One big fundamental aspect in planning a restroom design is the size. There would always be a point called peak times where the most amount of people want to go to the restroom. How many of them should be predicted beforehand and so the size decided would prevent any packed situation inside a restroom.

Entries and exits are another consideration. They have to accommodate even those individuals with mobility-impairments. A restroom should be designed to always be user friendly.

Shields between urinals are highly important in restroom design. Separate urinals can provide more privacy. This privacy partition, in return, make the users feel more comfortable. Shields also help prevent splash.

Floor plan is always in consideration. When designing a restroom, the floor should be assured to be non-slippery. On top of that, the floor surface should be easy for cleaning. It would be a problem every time someone slips on the floor while the others are in the room. Furthermore, the fact that a restroom is used by many people means it gets dirty easily and hence, easy cleaning is not just an option because it has to be clean all the time.

Another way to reduce the impression that a restroom is dirty is by getting it enough ventilation. Well ventilated restroom gives users enough light and good air and it avoid making the room feel cramped. A restroom shouldn't make the users feel suffocating.

Summary: Restroom design should focuses on its size, entries and exits, privacy partitions, floor plan, and ventilation.
